Title: Perfect Bridge from Original 80’s Return of the Jedi to Present-Day Star Wars Universe
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022
Review: I honestly would’ve been totally fine with a re-canonization of The Courtship of Princess Leia, in a fancy new package. Yet Princess and the Scoundrel was actually a MUCH better idea lol. Beth Revis does a FANTASTIC job of merging all the various tones and performances of two of the Big Three who we’ve seen developed further in the years since the Disney buyout, including the comics. You get as much of a sense of Alden Ehrenreich’s hopeless romantic, sewer-rat Han, as you do Harrison Ford’s uncontainable swagger shell over a soft heart of gold Han Solo (from both trilogies). You also get a virtual treasure trove of internal development of Leia Organa, which truly puts into perspective all the hats she’s worn in her life-long struggle against fascism and the dark side. If we add this “standalone” novel to the ongoing Marvel comics; the Obi Wan Disney+ series; Chuck Wendig’s superb Aftermath trilogy, Claudia Gray’s excellent Bloodline novel, and the sequel movies, we can more deeply accept that Leia is not just Your Worshipfulness - she is a tireless revolutionary, a workaholic, a seasoned tactician, a trauma survivor, a brawler, an elder stateswoman, a firm beacon of the light, and a hero. In addition, some of the juiciest parts of this honeymoon-turned-adventure caper come when Revis reminds us that she also has “that mighty Skywalker blood” flowing through her veins, and she didn’t just hear the name of Darth Vader one random afternoon from a crazy old hermit on her way to Tosche station - she likely heard detailed reports of his and the Empire’s atrocities in her underground work in Bail Organa and Mon Mothma’s secret Rebellion. And then there was the whole torture thing on the Death Star. So the jumble of emotions and her relationship to her birth father - as well as to the Force, and the Jedi - is much more nuanced and thorny than that of her farmboy twin, giving us a fresh new perspective on Luke’s forgiveness and redemption of Anakin in Return of the Jedi. Would he truly have stayed the paragon of the light side and resisted the Emperor’s temptation of power, had he experienced the same things that Leia had for so long? Does it then make more sense why Leia would be wary of learning the ways of the Force as Luke’s student, when she knows the power of their bloodline, as well as the lingering pain she carries, and the things she’s seen over and over again? These are excellent questions that Revis gets you to engage with in this story, in addition to laying the foundation of Han and Leia’s partnership in love beyond the heady rush of romance in the face of certain death which we get from the original trilogy. There are also lots of great bonus tidbits which put us right back in that purest optimistic moment after ROTJ, when the rebels blow up the Death Star again and the murder bears throw a planet-wide party in the forest - so much so that you can virtually hear the original celebration song from 1983 before the end credits roll. This one’s a keeper.

Title: A very mature Star Wars story
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2022
Review: A lot of Star Wars stuff Is very light on character development, especially since it has typically revolved around the Skywalker saga and characters we already know , but in this novel, Beth Revis has given us more insight into the greatest love story in the galaxy. We learn more about Han and Leia, not just as a couple, but also who they are as individuals. I hope that Disney and Lucasfilm have enough sense to let Revis continue to write their story, especially Leia's relationship with the Force and the events that tear Han and Leia apart and result in the separation we see in The Force Awakens. Although I can always hope Lucasfilm removes the last 3 films of the Skywalker saga and allows Ms. Revis to write them a better story.

Title: Disney Marketing: Let's see how many mentions of the Star Wars hotel we can fit in!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2022
Review: I've tried to like the novels since Disney took over, but other than the Thrawn series I've mostly been disappointed, with a few exceptions. Not just because of poor writing, but also the utter chaos of mixing everything from young adult books to audio scripts to regular novels without really identifying what is what. I dislike having to read a script rather than a full novelization...it's a cheap and fast method of story-telling in my opinion and I really dislike having to read it to continue the overall storyline.
I looked forward to this book, expecting it to not have those same problems. But it turned into a exercise of fitting in as many references to the hotel in Orlando as possible and name-dropping characters from current movies that it ruined the mindset of 'a galaxy far, far away' and instead read more like Disney Marketing pamphlets for the hotel. It takes me out of the story while I roll my eyes at the heavy-handed synergy being pushed.
The story itself was a little silly...while we know Leia is known for putting the interests of other before her own, they were on their HONEYMOON, both her and Han come off as strangely hot and then cold in their relationship. Yes, they bickered in the beginning of their relationship, but supposedly they had moved past that, and while the argument is made that theirs is a match made in the stars...sure doesn't sound like it...
I bought all of the earlier novels for years, have a large bookshelf full, most were good, a few were clunkers, most with stories that were later dismissed by the new regime, but I'm becoming very disappointed in the quality now.
Not that I expect it to change, Disney, after all, 'knows better'...

Title: Han and Leia - Bittersweet Start to a Doomed Romance
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2022
Review: I loved this story and the way it highlights the deep-seated differences between Han and Leia that nearly doom them from the start. They are so different and, despite loving each other, not really suited for each other as life-long companions. I also loved the exploration of Leia’s coming to terms with being the daughter of Darth Vader and her realization that she is, for all intents and purposes, living on borrowed time as she knows word will eventually get out and she will never be viewed the same. Entering a commitment like marriage while under a belief that your life as you know it is on the precipice isn’t the healthiest way to start a relationship and it’s easy to see how such a belief would deeply affect how Leia acted and perhaps caused her to devote even more energy to her politicking at the expense of developing and nurturing her family (Han, Ben, and Luke). So enjoyable but also bittersweet because we all know how this ends.

Review: A wonderful book. The tie-ins are terrific. Both the comic series that had the adventure of the attempt to get back Han’s frozen body and the new Disney World’s Holcyon are intermixed wonderfully. This book starts exactly with the end of Episode 6 and you get the feel of the 1st days of the move from Rebel to
New Republic. This is a must read for any Star Wars fan and beyond a first read for anyone lucky enough to have booked a trip on the Holcyon.
